Ditching the winter blahs

Does anyone else struggle as bad as I do with the winter blues?  I feel like this winter was the worst!  I am so happy to feel spring in the air I could sing.  In fact I think my heart is already singing.  I just couldn’t get motivated to do much of anything this winter.  I struggled through my runs, found not one but two injuries, a torn calf and inflamed posterior tendons in both legs, and only managed to get in one or two workouts a week.  My food choices left a lot to be desired some days and I felt like staying in my sweats whenever possible.  It was a crappy winter.  Good news is, its over for this year!  Thanks goodness.

I feel my energy and my spirit lifted already ❤  I have been doing more trail running and less road running.  I started running with my girls in the double stroller again (man they got heavy this winter, lol) and my workouts are finally lining up.  I am back to healthy eating 80% of the time (minus Easter ;)) and I am generally feeling good.

I have really missed my outdoor bootcamps and the participants and can’t wait to get started next month.  I am doing drop in classes this year as I will be spending basically the whole summer camping with my girls and husband.  I want to soak up every minute of summer this year and I plan to be outside pretty much every day.  We have a new camping trailer and we are going to get full use of it!  My girls love being outside as much as I do ❤

I am so happy to get back to my blog, I have missed writing.  My journal caught most of my dialogue this winter.  I hope to update this on a more regular basis going forward.  I have lots to share and lots of pictures to post.  I want to share my running escapades in the upcoming race season and hope that my legs will hold up to allow me to participate.  They still aren’t 100%, but I am pretty stubborn so I am working hard to mend them.  Trail running is so much easier on them than running on pavement.

I am going to share some workouts that I have put together for my bootcamp classes and some strength workouts that I like to do at home for runners.  I hope you drop back to check them out!

Any tips with staying on track through the winter blues?  I would love to hear them!

Summer Hiatus

Summer was amazing.  Running, camping, family, bootcamps, beaches.  Just amazing.  It always feels too short but that is summer here in the maritimes.  I had planned to blog all summer but it just kept getting bumped to the bottom of the list.  My girls are growing WAY too fast, my baby is already one.  It makes me a little sad.  She is walking and starting to talk and is in to everything.  My two year old takes up every spare minute I have.  She is so intelligent.  Too intelligent.  And she plays me like a deck of cards.  She keeps me on my toes to say the very least.

My summer bootcamps were great, although attendance was low, which I expected due to summer vacations and other commitments such as summer sports.  It was still fun and we still got our fitness on 🙂  The next session begins September 13 and is filling up!  I am so excited to get started.  Fall is the best season for outdoor workouts.

My running is coming along awesome!  I am just about to do my second half marathon this year.  It is the Cape Breton Fiddlers Run in Sydney, Nova Scotia.  Check out the link http://www.capebretonfiddlersrun.com.  My goal is to do it in under two hours.  I missed the mark by just a few minutes last time so I know I can do it!  I clocked 155kms last month and that was the most mileage I have had in a one month period this year.  My long runs get easier and easier and I can’t wait to up my mileage next year.  The only thing holding me back right now is the large lack of sleep from being up with the girls all hours of the night.  It takes it’s toll on you after a while.  If and when they start sleeping better, hopefully I will start sleeping better and will be setting my sights on some longer runs next year including off road races and marathons.  For now I am enjoying running with the double stroller and my girls are too ❤

Life is busy.  Isn’t everyones though?  Sure seems that way.  I want to be home with my girls as long as possible, hopefully until they both start school, so I have four after school kids, and spent the summer painting and redecorating the basement to accommodate two exchange students.  It is going to be a busy fall but I am looking forward to having a full house.  I love company and the girls will benefit greatly from having other cultures under our roof and school age kids around.

Here’s a few pictures from this summer.  We had family photos done last month, there are some race photos and a few from mud hero.  It was a great summer and I am looking forward to getting back to blogging, working out regularly and routine.  I am a creature of habit and I love my routine!

Outdoor Bootcamp Week 2

We are now in week two of the first session of our outdoor bootcamp and it is going great!  I love brainstorming to come up with new and fun ideas to take to the class.  I love team work and partnering up and a little bit of friendly competition.  It makes it more interesting and helps you to push a little harder.

We have a great group of women that continues to grow.  It’s great to be outside having fun, getting fit and socializing at the same time.  We have a great outdoor spot, lots of green space, tires to use, benches, a paved area, you name it we got it! We totally lucked out with this space.  I hope to be able to use their indoor space next winter when we have to move it inside.  The location is central and close to home for us.

I try to make every class different while still incorporating the same or similar moves.  This way the bootcampers don’t get bored but they can also see progression and improvement.  Every class involves at least one game, sometimes two and I try to keep a theme, such as drills, strength, teamwork, partner work etc. to keep the class flowing.

Last week was mostly teamwork so tomorrow night we are going to do some solo drill work.  It is going to fun and the ladies are going to have to work hard 😉

Here are a few pics from last weeks class with the tire drills.  It was a fun one!

Week 6 MEC Half Marathon Training and Bootcamp # 3

I am currently in week 6 of my half marathon training and am getting pretty excited to be hitting longer distances.  This past Saturday I left my front door and headed out towards the ocean.  I managed just over 13k in all my hungover glory lol.  I think it was the fresh salt air ❤

I don’t get out too much these days, I would much rather stay home and snuggle my girlies most Friday nights, but I managed to make it to my sisters birthday party and four whole beer later had to switch to coffee.  I think I used to be able to have more than four beer before being ready for bed.  Oh well, at least I will make a cheap date for my hubby when we actually do get out haha.

I don’t know about you but when I am not feeling a run sometimes just switching up the route makes all the difference.  Today when I set out I normally have a few routes I use but decided today to head in a different direction and see if I could shake out the running blahs.  I don’t know what it is but every couple of weeks I seem to hit a wall for a few days where I feel like I really need to push myself to get through it.  Most of the time I love running and it feels great to be out there.  Today, I felt like I had to talk myself through each kilometre.  All 7 of them.  It was such a mental game.  The best feeling though is when you are done.  That is what keeps me going the distance.  I refuse to be a quitter!

At least I look like I enjoyed my run today, my skin is glowing 🙂

My appetite is crazy right now from the increase in miles and the workouts and all the other stuff I have on the go.  We are expanding the veggie garden this year and I have been shovelling dirt for the past two days.  I definitely don’t need an upper body workout this week.  Or next.  haha.  I am so excited to get my veggies going this year 🙂

Tomorrow night is the third outdoor bootcamp class I have held and will be the last drop in class before the session starts May 17.  I am having so much fun with it!  Every class has been a different workout so far.  I like to use similar exercises but use fun games and challenges to complete them.  I love partner and team exercises and a little friendly competition to amp our boot campers up!

Here is a pic of my workout plan for tomorrow.  We have the perfect space for the class.  There are readily available tires for us to use so this class is going through drills with the tires.  We always start with a warm up and finish with a cool down and I like to try and fit a quick challenge in between the main workout and the cool down.  Sometimes it is a team challenge, sometimes core challenges or partner activities.  This week it involves a lot of burpees.  I don’t want to give away the surprise though so that is all I will say 😉

I am going to try and snap some pictures tomorrow night to share as long as all my boot campers don’t mind 🙂

Catching up

My to do list tells me to blog three times a week, minimum.  My reality is telling me that is not happening right now.  Life is busy.  But I love busy.  I am practicing for my practical exam for my fitness instructor specialist, training for my half marathon in June, instructing my bootcamps (insert super smiley face here) and spending as much time as possible with my kids outside.  We love fishing, we have yet to catch anything but it is good quality fun for us ❤

IMG_5983.jpg

We have great trails around our house and get out on them as much as possible either walking or biking.

We recently bought an old 1980s camper and I am itching to get it opened up and cleaned out to prep for camping season.  We love being outside, spending time with my kids outside is priority when the sun is shining.  I am very lucky to be able to do that.

My half marathon training is going great.  I love love love running.  I may have mentioned that before 😉  I am not making it to as many trail runs as I would like to, but that’s ok.  I still get all my kilometres in for my training schedule.

I held my first two outdoor bootcamps and they went awesome!  I am loving it and have had really great feedback.  The first class was eight ladies and the second one was nine.  I have one more drop in class next week before the first session starts on May 17.

I never would have dreamed that I would have everything in my life that I do right now.  I am so very blessed in so many ways.  I am thankful for the woman I have become and am still becoming.  I am grateful to have such amazing people in my life and thankful that I have finally made it to a place where I feel grounded and part of my community.  I spent a lot of time moving around in past years and never really laid down any roots.  This is where I belong.  This is home.  I can’t imagine raising my girls anywhere else ❤

This afternoon we are taking the girls out fishing in hopes to catch the ‘big one’.  Tonight is date night and tomorrow my husband is biking alongside me for my long run of 13km.  Sunday morning is Mother’s Day Brunch and then an afternoon with family.  It is going to be a great weekend.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the Mamas out there ❤

In Fitness and In Health Progress

This month has been a whirlwind of events.  All good ones.  Goodbye winter blues, hello spring fever ❤

I am now halfway through my Fitness Instructor Specialist course and loving every minute of it.  Two more in-class sessions, a written and practical exam and I am officially certified 🙂  My business partner Brittany and I are taking the course together and really love being able to travel together and partner up to help one another.  Such a fun experience.  I love having to step outside my comfort zone.  I am at my best when I have to step outside of it and do things I could have never imagined me doing.  Like for example, teaching a class.  Never in a million years would I have ever thought I was capable of getting up in front of a group of people, all eyes on me, and teaching.  Now, I know that is not only possible, I am super excited for it.

You know how sometimes you just know things are meant to be because the universe just keeps making good things happen.  Well we have been offered so many great opportunities in the process of getting our bootcamps up and running I just know that this is going to be awesome!

Today Brittany and I stopped in to buy some chickens from a local farm on the way home and the owner offered us a spot on his radio show!  Amazing.  We get a 15 minute spot to talk about our business and what it is all about.  It’s a local radio station that does a segment on different communities including ours.  Such a great opportunity for us to get our name out there and what we are all about.

If anyone reading lives in our area, we buy the chickens from Blue Barn Farms and they are delicious.  Here is the link to their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Blue-Barn-Farms-180981041924660/

I just feel like there is so much happening for us.  I know it is going to be a great year!

Hopefully I will get an opportunity to blog a little more in the coming weeks, I miss sharing 😦

My Ducks Are Lining Up

Don’t you just love it when a good plan starts to come together ❤  It is the best feeling ever!  I have been searching and searching for the perfect space for our evening and weekend bootcamps.  Somewhere we would have the opportunity to expand into morning classes as well if there was enough demand for them.  We needed a place with a green space, a playground, ample parking and close to a trail or low traffic neighbourhood for running drills.  Well, I found it!  And they are going to let me use it at NO CHARGE!  Seriously, the community we are a part of is pretty amazing.  I am learning that more and more as I dive deeper into all of this.

We moved into this area three years ago and I thought at the time the fitness community was lacking.  Boy was I wrong.  There is so much going on here.  Lots of different styles of classes, running groups, yoga, trail runners, you name it.  It’s here.  And I am only just seeing the tip of the iceberg still.  I can’t wait to get the bootcamp classes started and meet more people.  It is going to be such an awesome year!

I am about halfway through my Fitness Instructor Specialist course.  It is a lot of anatomy and biology right now, which is great because I recently did both of those courses while working on my nursing.  I find it hard to study much while my husband is away, nap time is filled with other chores and by the time the kids are asleep at night my eyes are barely open.  It is much easier to blog or write out bootcamp drills than it is to get through a chapter of anatomy.  It’s interesting, don’t get me wrong, it’s just hard on my eyes.  They want to close.  But I love knowing that I am building a great foundation for my bootcamps and I can’t wait to take other Canfitpro courses this year.

I designed and ordered my flyers and business cards this week.  Pretty exciting!  I can’t wait to share them, I am pretty happy with how they turned out.  I used photographs from previous bootcamps as backgrounds for them.  I hope to put a few of them around at local businesses.  I know everything is online now, but I know some of the local business owners and it can’t hurt, right?!

I hope to have everything posted for registration early next month as I am offering a discounted rate to those who sign up early.  I want to make sure our classes are filled, especially for the first session or two since we are new in the fitness business.

Lots going on for In Fitness And In Health these days.  All pretty exciting stuff for me.  As I said before, this has been my dream for a very long time.

My running is going great, I am doing two 7km runs through the week and one longer run on the weekend.  I am still focusing on strength training until the end of February.  March is going to be kind of a mishmash month of both and at the end of March I start training for a half marathon, so my focus will be on running and getting my speed up a bit.  I got 7km in yesterday in 40 minutes.  That was probably working at about 80% of what I could do.  Not leisurely but not hard either.  I was on the phone with my husband for most of it.  I only get to chat with him a few times a week so I didn’t want to miss our conversation ❤

By the way if you are looking for great running ear buds, check out the Monster ClarityHD High Performance Wireless earbuds.  I love mine!  The sound is great, they stay put and no dangling wires while you are running. Bonus.  It’s the little things that drive you crazy when you are running.  Like ear buds slipping out.  Grrrr.  These don’t do that, they are awesome!
